The Year of The Abundant Pigs

Apparently, in light of sensitivity towards Muslims, this coming new year – according to the Chinese zodiac – isn’t going to be called “The Year of the Pig”. Instead, it’s going to be referred to as “The Year of Abundance” or something of the sort. I’m not sure how true this is, but someone’s colleague read this somewhere or… something.

Maybe it’s just me, but doesn’t that kind of equate ‘pigs’ to ‘abundance’? Isn’t that, then, causing a deeper insensitivity – since now anything that’s referred to as abundant is going to instrinsically be corelated to pigs, as per this new substitution.

Sometimes traditions are better left as they are – I mean, I don’t mean any offense to Muslims around the world, but if you guys have gotten on fine every 12 years whenever there is a Year of the Pig, what’s wrong with leaving it as it is? Racial/cultural problems often exist/worsen because of two things – 1. insensitivity toward a certain race/culture, and 2. oversensitivity toward certain races/cultures. This one is definitely falling into the latter.

Furthermore, considering how 2007-2008 is purportedly the best year for pigs, it’s kinda sad that their year is being stripped of its title, don’t you think? How are the Chinese going to feel about that?

  • it’s just plain retarded and misinformed. what now man? year of the unhalal unmentionable brother of beef? this comes from the same stupidity that says muslims people can’t touch dogs.

funny thing is, the more we make stupid “concessions” like this, the more we kid ourselves that we are getting along when all we really are doing is treading carefully. without really understanding.

  • exactly! the ‘concessions’ that we’re making under the cause of “racial sensitivity” is actually one of the factors that’s causing this fear – and misunderstanding – of the other to deepen.

  • we can designate 2007 as the Year of Porco
