Space Travel

I’m running out of space. I’ve maxed out my 100GB harddrive on my mac and have taken to using my girlfriend’s laptop (which, to be fair, she ignores) for my photo storage. Only it’s really stupid, considering how Photoshop is on my mac and not on this ugly thing. Anyway, I just checked, and I only have 16GB left on this 60GB harddrive.

I need an external harddrive for my photos. I’m thinking… as big as freeking possible (300GB?) and as small as possible (not the ginormous chunky ones that are about as big as a new computer anyway).

Okay, so maybe 300GB was overdoing a little (or not…) or something. But the point is that I desperately need space. Anyone has any recommendos?

Ashwin should be the best person to ask when it comes to harddrive. Because that’s the subject he is doing his PhD right now!! He can even tell you all about Terabyte…

    Burn DVDs.

Your HDD will always eventually run out of space. So you need DVDs for stuff that is static and won’t change over time, so you can just burn and forget (maybe checking every 3 years to make sure they haven’t rotted).

DVDs are good for movies, anime, TV shows, photos (once you’ve renamed them), MP3s and such.

    Actually that’s pretty much everything.

Not as convenient, but much cheaper, safer (DVDs are more hardy, having no moving parts) and a long term solution (instead of buying new HDDs all the time)

yuri: I totally forgot about that! Yayyyy

agagooga: You’ve got a good point, but I’m super disorganized when it comes to anything not INSIDE my com - i.e. I’ll just forget to label the disks, and stash them in places where I’ll never find them again. So.. pricier, but in this case HDDs are probably safer for me.

What I think I’ll do is get a smaller HDD for the photos/music and keep the TV shows on DVDs. Thanks for reminding me!

a 250gb hard disk with a firewire casing prob costs ard 300bucks and these are the 3.5″ type. u can get them at sim lim quite easily. it’s pretty decent if you are not looking at portabilty factor for your hdd.

I got my 300GB with 3.5″ Sarotech Hard Box for about $300. With firewire and USB 2.0. I don’t need portability, so that’s fine.

actually harddisks are more cost effective than dvds and take up much less space for the same amt of data storage.

you would have to either go for value and storage but chunky = 3.5″ or

elegance, less storage, less value for money = 2.5″/1.8″

i would rather get a 3.5″ than many 2.5″s but i do carry around an 80 gig 2.5″ astone with 5 years’ warranty. fits quite neatly into my pocket. got it at $200++ a few years ago so should be much cheaper now?

My current solution to the space problem is a combination of an external HDD and DVD writer. The external HDD is a 200GB Western Digital drive with an El Cheapo casing (USB 2.0). I also use a Lacie DVD writer for permanant backup. When my photos hit the 4.7GB barrier, they are backed up onto a DVD and filed in a case. :) The same goes for my work, music, and other misc stuff.

nonchann: Thanks, not really looking for the portability factor but space MIGHT be an issue in future so I haven’t really decided. However, price wise, the 3.5″ is so much more worth it so I might just end up with one of those and try to work the space around it.

    poppy: That brand ok?

humph: 80GB for $200++?? So asspensiffffff.

Ashwin: Thanks for the input. Any recommendos for brands?

I heard that Apple recommends Lacie here in Singapore, but I’m not sure if it’s because they get a cut or something. They were having a fairly good sale on 2.5″ samsung ones (with Firewire) at South Asia (Funan), so you should check that out.

Personally, I think 3.5″ is the way to go, even if it’s a little bigger, because the prices rocket so much steeper when it goes down to 2.5″ that it isn’t quite worth it, to me, at the moment.

Yeah the prices are really making me bank sharply towards the 3.5″ even though its kinda chunky. Don’t really like the kind that need power sources though. Not enough plugs. :(

ok a friend who just came back from singapore bought a samsung 80 gig 2.5″ internal for $135 then another $15 for casing at sim lim. if i’m not wrong all 3.5″s should need their own power supply. the power drawn from the usb port can’t be enough.

humph: Bleh. 80GB for $150 is kinda steep if I can get 300GB for $250 though, don’t you think?

yeah. but you said you don’t want to have another power plug what.

Yeah, I know. Opportunity costs. Bleh. I hate making decisions.
